The Great improvements can be made; but must be done without damaging the one that already working perfectly. Endurance and performance count in Google AdWords on both organic and paid side. Most of the times, people "fix" what was already working to make it "better" only to find they have driven their sales into the ground. It can be avoided very easily. Here is what you have to do.  It's a variation of "Peel and paste" that we call it as "Pasting without Peeling". You phase in new campaigns but you don't delete the old ones or the old keywords immediately. Create few new groups with new ads instead deleting the group or keywords that are working just yet.  Instead of deleting the old keywords and keyword phrases, just edit the prices of the bid on those individual keywords and cut them back.  You can always pause the campaigns later.  If sales drop all of a sudden, you can put everything back as it was.

By following this method you can bring dramatic developments over time, but not risk your everyday business because the ads will take time to get approved and the CTRs take time to get recognized.
